To capture benefits create a career journal portfolio

The idea is as career activities and experiences are happening you are capturing all ‘light globe moments’  in your Career Journal Portfolio.  "What’s that?", I hear you say.  It is a place to keep information about your achievements, work experience, volunteering, activities and experiences of interest, goals, careers research and details of people that can speak about your achievements and capabilities.

A habit you should get into is maintaining a journal in ‘real time’.   I emphasise ‘real time’ to make a point that ‘career clues’ can happen with regularity.  Remember we are trying to capture information that excites, inspires and creates personal fulfillment. It may be an activity at a conference, hobby, life experience or while going for a walk.   You see it is not limited to an organised experience or activity.  It’s about the journey!

Funkee Careers will open your mind to career choices and help you to develop action plans to navigate our forever changing environment, for the journey ahead.  Your career journey evolution will be dependent on the amount of time and effort taken to invest in YOU.  By being resilent you maximise your potential.  "Knowing what you want to be is an outcome. You see?"  Sometimes we will rush the outcome and treat it as a 'tick in box' exercise, often without any ongoing process of exploring and validing our career choices.

We need to capture career data in formulating a career development portfoiio for the puposes of 'Who am I?', 'Where am I going?' and 'How am I getting there?'  Career development experiences and activities are happening in front of us everyday. We need to apply a 'reflective and deeper learning' to our career development experiences and activities.

For example, a person undertook a Accounting degree in the belief he would enjoy working and learning about business in a financial sense.  On completing his degree and working with clients in both Chartered and Public Practice environments he was enjoying the interactions with people and becoming less and less engaged in 'recording financial history' and business budgeting.  Reflecting on these experiencies he started to think about making a career change, without going back to 'square one'.  He decided he wanted to move into Human Resources based on discussions he had with his allies.  Where to start?  Get a job with an Employment Recruitment Agency, where he could apply his accounting knowledge and skills in placing accountants in businesses.  Tick one, recruitment being part of the HR function.  Recruitment led to being a HR Generalist with skills and experience employee relations, performance management, strategic planning, professional and develepment.

If we reflect on the learning from this experience in a career development context, we are witnessing the evolution of a persons career by gaining a greater comprehension of 'Who am I?', 'Where am I going? and 'How am I getting there?'.  While this transition has been happening the person had been capturing career data in a journal and/or file, which became part of his career journal portfolio.
